The Crown

The Crown   Saran RAi  He failed and became economically troubled. He had no job, no business, no farming—nothing. When the situation reached the point of hunger, he came up with an idea: to make a crown and place it on the head of the greatest person in society as a mark of honor. “In an age of democracy, what use is a crown?” people said. “A crown is not for making someone a king; it is a good way to honor the greatest person,” he replied. A crown, of course, had to be expensive. Thinking that the dignity of his place was at stake, he collected large donations from everyone. Politicians, industrialists, traders, writers, social workers, and all other so-called big people considered themselves the greatest person of that place. They thought they themselves would get to wear the crown. Therefore, everyone supported his work. They even began flattering him for the crown. “If I get the crown, winning elections will be easy,” politicians thought. “I’ll become a great...

Short Narrative

Short  Narrative (लघुलेख)    Saran Ra  Yesterday’s narratives have become today’s religious scriptures. The minds of so-called modern people are still filled with concepts of God, demons, heaven, hell, sin, and virtue. Just as the narratives of the past have transformed into religious scriptures, today’s narratives could become tomorrow’s ethical guidelines for human life.  It is astonishing to see images of gods hanging in large hospitals. Those who study modern scientific medicine and treat human bodies seem even more influenced by past narratives, or perhaps they use the idea of God to cover up their flawed treatments and medical errors   The more educated people are, the less they seem to want to differentiate between narratives and reality. They appear to be even stronger blind supporters and protectors of illusions, driven by narrow self-interest.  Whatever the case, just as the storytellers of the past have successfully controlle...

The Warmth of Love

The Warmth of Love Saran Rai As usual, the husband had gone for his early morning walk. On his way back, a light drizzle began. He kept walking, getting slightly wet in the drizzling rain. Soon, the drizzle turned into a heavy downpour. He got even wetter, but instead of stopping, he thought, If I run, I can reach home in ten minutes. He started running. Then, hailstones began to fall. Now, he had no choice but to take shelter. The hailstorm lasted for about five minutes. Once it stopped, he continued his way home in the heavy rain, completely drenched. His wife was waiting at the door with an umbrella. She said, "I was coming to get you with the umbrella, but I got distracted… Anyway, take off your wet clothes, shoes, and socks outside before stepping in. The carpet will get dirty." "She cares more about the carpet than me!" he thought, feeling a sudden wave of irritation. It was winter. He was shivering from the unexpected cold rain, his body trembling v...

Life is an Examination

Image
Life is an Examination   Saran Rai Every moment of life, Every second of time, Is a moment of examination. Progress, decline, ascent, descent, Uphill, downhill, light, and darkness, Love, hatred, victory, and defeat— Moments of struggle and battle. What, who, and why are important? Engrave Tolstoy in your heart, Whatever the field, wherever you are, Fight like a warrior with courage. If Darwin is true, Reaching the destination while battling is life. To succeed in the examination of life is to live. Life is an examination, And an examination is life. To think that success in life's examination brings Only happiness, enjoyment, delight, wealth, progress, heights, greatness, Achievement, and glory Can be an illusion of ignorance. Even those who fail exams are alive, Smiling like flowers in the garden of life with contentment. The beauty of worldly life lies in Activity, service, restraint, and patience. Concealing sorrow within the heart And smiling gently— This is greatness. Examina...

Difference

Difference Saran Rai "You are poor because you had many children without family planning!"  "No. We are poor because we were born to poor fathers, and there are no governments, leaders, or parties working for the poor." This is the poor person's response.  The journalist isn't satisfied. Does the poor person know more than the journalist?  "Earthquakes and the Indian blockade have increased poverty."  "No, the corrupt and lazy government and the leaders in power, who are making 'double by day and quadruple by night,' are the ones increasing poverty."  The journalist is astonished. The poor are adept at talking like leaders, but why aren't they leaders?  If they were leaders, they wouldn't remain poor, would they?  They would also become rich. The difference between a leader and a poor person is that 'leaders don't remain poor, and because of leaders, the poor don't become rich.'

The Smiling Picture in the Frame

Short Story The Smiling Picture in the Frame By Saran Rai Life was spent amidst poverty and lack. Dreams of eating delicious meals, wearing nice clothes, or traveling to distant lands were never fulfilled. Life was lived by accepting whatever came our way. Whenever there was an opportunity to attend a wedding feast, she never agreed to go. After missing several weddings, I wondered, "Why doesn’t she want to go?" With the meager salary of a teacher, I had to pawn her jewelry to manage monthly expenses. Some pieces were lost forever because we couldn't repay the loan with interest. She didn’t have jewelry to wear at weddings. Women adorned themselves with jewelry and came gleaming in gold. She feared being embarrassed among friends. So, she wouldn’t attend. Yet, not once did she complain, “You never bought me jewelry.” During Grandfather’s eighty-fourth birthday, my father had asked us to come to the Terai with a camera. Back then, we didn’t have digital cameras like...

Short Story: The Miraculous Cottage

Short Story: The Miraculous Cottage By Saran Rai Far above the miraculous cottage, many people like me have gathered to witness the spectacle. All eyes are fixated on the miraculous cottage. The miraculous cottage is at the center. It is not very large—barely capable of holding fifty people at most. However, its decorations are dazzling. Precious diamonds, gems, and rubies studded on its golden walls shimmer brilliantly. The more one looks at it, the more mesmerizing it becomes. Nobody knows when it was built. A town has grown around it, and this town has its own unique charm. Expensive hotels, jewelry and clothing stores, and photo and video studios surround the miraculous cottage. The miraculous cottage, for a hefty fee, transforms people aged over 80 into youthful men or women for an hour. Thousands of wealthy people from all over the world come to await their turn. The continuous influx of tourists and aged visitors waiting in line has significantly boosted the local economy. From ...
